Which automotive components are related to fuel?

Within the entire automotive system, while various components may appear to operate independently, they are actually connected by one indispensable element: fuel. Fuel links the entire fuel system together. Let’s take a look at the components associated with fuel.

Storage Components

The components most directly related to fuel are those that store it. The fuel tank holds the fuel. A fuel level sensor monitors the fuel level in real-time and transmits data to the dashboard to display the remaining fuel quantity. The fuel tank cap balances internal and external air pressure and prevents fuel evaporation and leakage; some models also feature an anti-theft locking function.

Delivery Components

Fuel delivery begins when the vehicle starts. During transport, the fuel passes through the fuel pump, fuel lines, and the fuel pressure regulator.
The fuel pump is well-known; it pressurizes and extracts fuel, delivering it into the fuel lines—a crucial first step in starting the vehicle. The fuel line assembly is a subsystem comprising delivery lines, return lines, and injection lines. The fuel pressure regulator stabilizes fuel pressure within the lines, ensuring a constant pressure differential across various operating conditions.

Filtration and Distribution Components

After being transported, the fuel undergoes filtration and distribution, processes involving the fuel filter and the fuel distribution rail. The fuel filter features two stages—coarse and fine filtration—to trap impurities such as rust and gum, thereby protecting precision components like fuel injectors. The fuel distribution rail integrates a pressure sensor and distributes fuel evenly to the injectors of each cylinder; some models are equipped with a pulsation damper to counteract fuel pressure fluctuations.

Injection Components

After distribution, the fuel reaches the fuel injectors and the electronic control unit (ECU). The fuel injector atomizes the fuel and sprays it into the cylinder. The ECU, acting as the central control hub of the fuel system, adjusts the fuel injection strategy in real-time.

Evaporation Components

Of course, not all fuel is consumed to generate power while the vehicle is running; some evaporates. This is where the activated carbon canister and the canister purge valve come into play. The activated carbon canister is filled with activated carbon to adsorb fuel vapors generated while the vehicle is parked, preventing their direct release into the atmosphere. The canister purge valve is controlled by the ECU to direct the adsorbed fuel vapors into the combustion chamber for secondary combustion, thereby reducing emissions and recovering fuel.
